On 14 May 2024, independent Ukrainian outlet Hromadske Radio said that its website was being targeted in a new cyber attack, which had started on May 12. Despite the large scale of the Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack, hackers had not managed to bring the outlet’s website offline, according to a statement published by Hromadske Radio. The outlet specified that the attack was carried out in two waves, and that at its peak the website had received 84.22 million access requests (timeframe unclear).

As with previous DDoS attacks, hackers were especially active at night and early in the morning. Another common point with previous incidents is the origin of hackers, which according to Hromadske Radio’s digital director Serhiy Omelchenko remains unchanged: India, the United States, Germany, Vietnam and the United Kingdom. According to Hromadske Radio’s editor-in-chief Victoria Yermolayeva, the outlet cannot be sure of who is responsible for the attacks, even if its team “can guess” this, given that the fact that major hacker attacks started following Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022.
