Four media organizations in Tanzania were each fined five million Tanzanian shillings (€2,000) and ordered to apologize for the “transmission of false and misleading information” on the country’s approach to managing COVID-19. The outlets were Star Media Tanzania Ltd, Multichoice Tanzania Ltd and Azam Digital Broadcast Ltd. All three were fined under the Media Services Act. Mwananchi newspaper was fined five million Tanzanian shillings (€2,000) and suspended for publishing a photo of President John Magufuli out shopping in a crowded area, which the newspaper suggested was breaching the government’s own social distancing guidelines. Authorities said the photo was not taken recently and fined the outlet under the Media Services Act.
