Belarusian journalist and activist Denist Stagi was found in his apartment in Kyiv unconscious and severely beaten. His wife had fled Kyiv with their child but returned to the city after she was not able to contact her husband. The writer, who has contributed to Ukrainian media outlets Dilova Stolytsia and EnergoBusiness, had been tortured in the apartment for several days. Stagi had been injected with drugs and poison. He had multiple bruises and cut wounds and was severely beaten. The apartment was ransacked, but no valuables were missing. The case has been investigated for weeks, which is why his wife had not disclosed information before. Stagi has been living in Ukraine for years. The motive for the attack was unclear and it is not known if the attack was carried out because of his journalistic work. His wife said she believed that the reason for the attack was Stagi’s activity with Belarusians in Ukraine and the objective was to kill him. The couple had previously received threats.
