On November 10, 2023, unknown armed individuals invaded the home of journalist Nerry Ushindi of Radio Télévision Ishango (RTI) in the Mwangaza district in North Kivu prinvice. According to the journalist’s account, the assailants took away his work equipment and an amount of 400,000 DRC francs (about 140 euros). The assailants severely beat the journalists and his mother. Ushindi is known for his criticism of the prevailing insecurity in the region. Fred Mastaki, president of the local Association of Journalists of Basongora (AJB) said the attack had been committed following a curfew imposed by the local authorities. According to AJB, as of the time this report was filed, at least 10 journalists have been physically attacked since January this year. Patrol officers, civilians, and members of pressure groups are the perpetrators of these violations against journalists.
