Environmental and climate journalists under fire:
Strategies to promote free and safe news coverage of the global environmental crisis
WORLD PRESS FREEDOM DAY 2024
Santiago, Chile

Addressing the global climate and environmental crisis requires accurate, independent, and accessible journalism that can inform the public debate, clearly highlight the public interest, and protect those most affected by the crisis.

Producing such journalism, however, is fraught with risk. Journalists covering climate and environmental stories often face great hostility and different forms of attacks aimed at silencing their work.

Held on the sideline of UNESCO’s 2024 World Press Freedom Day conference, this panel discussion will look at strategies that journalists, news outlets, states, and media support organizations should adopt to ensure journalists can cover climate and environmental stories freely and safely.

This session is part of IPI’s ongoing efforts to promote free and independent coverage of climate and environmental stories. It follows the publication of IPI’s report “Climate and Environmental Journalists under Fire“.

In the course of the session, the results of Internews’s global survey of climate and environmental journalists, “Covering the Planet”, will be presented.
