Titled “Documenting Change / Empowering Media”, the 2013 IPI World Congress will examine the many challenges, concerns and opportunities facing journalists in a rapidly changing media landscape – not only in the Arab world, but around the globe.
Panels will focus on fostering free speech and media professionalism in the region after the Arab Spring; covering Syria; the role of women in the media; reporting on religion; criminal defamation; promoting and protecting the safety of journalists; and Internet regulation, among other issues.
In addition, the Congress will feature a stand-alone one-day workshop on “Using Social Media in News Coverage”, a special town-hall style debate on who is a journalist, and our annual awards evening honouring IPI’s 2013 Free Media Pioneer and 64th World Press Freedom Hero.
Check the programme here.
King Abdullah II of Jordan is expected to open the IPI World Congress.
The two-day event is being organized in cooperation with the Amman-based Center for Defending Freedom of Journalists (CDFJ) and will coincide with the CDFJ’s annual Media Freedom Defenders in the Arab World regional conference, which will take place just prior to the World Congress.
We encourage you to come earlier to take advantage of this unique joint conference opportunity.
