IPI welcomes new Board members from Spain, Kenya

Editors from Spain, Kenya, Brazil, the U.S., Norway, and Ukraine were elected to the IPI Executive Board at IPI’s recent General Assembly.

IPI is delighted to welcome as new Board members:

  • María Ramírez, Deputy managing editor and international correspondent, El Diario, Spain
  • Geoffrey Odundo, Group Managing Editor and Chief Executive Officer, Nation Media Group, Kenya

We are also pleased to welcome the following Board members who were re-elected or whose appointment was confirmed:

  • Paula Miraglia, Founder and CEO, Momentum – Journalism & Tech Task Force; Co-founder and publisher, Gama Revista, Brazil
  • Amelia Newcomb, Former Managing Editor (retired), Christian Science Monitor, U.S.
  • Daryna Shevchenko, CEO, Kyiv Independent, Ukraine
  • Espen Leirset, Editor-in-Chief, Innherred, Norway 

The election took place at the IPI General Assembly in October.

In addition, two Board members stepped down after their terms ended: Nobel Peace Prize laureate Maria Ressa of Rappler (Philippines), and Borja Echevarría, managing editor of Spain’s El País.

“We’re delighted to welcome a new group of highly accomplished editors and newsroom leaders to IPI’s Executive Board and to work with them to defend press freedom and support independent journalism at a crucial moment”, IPI Executive Director Scott Griffen said. “We’re also deeply grateful to our departing Board members for their many years of dedication and engagement.”

IPI membership is open to anyone active in the field of journalism, in news media outlets, as freelancers, in schools of journalism or in defence of press freedom rights, who supports the principle of freedom of the press and desires to co-operate in achieving IPI’s objectives.
