Jailed journalists: The ultimate test

Worldwide, more than 550 news professionals are currently behind bars. This session features two courageous journalists who have been imprisoned for doing their work. Alsu Kurmasheva, a Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty correspondent, was jailed for nine months in Russia after a secret trial. Tesfalem Waldyes has spent his career defending independent journalism in Ethiopia, including multiple arbitrary detentions and time in exile. They reflect on the lessons learned from their experiences, how to fight back, and the support journalists need during and after imprisonment.

Featuring:

  • Tesfalem Waldyes, Co founder and Editor in Chief, Ethiopia Insider
  • Bruce Shapiro, Executive Director, Global Center for Journalism and Trauma
  • Alsu Kurmasheva, Press Freedom Advocate, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL)
