The International Press Institute (IPI) today launched a new secure contact form based on open-source GlobaLeaks whistleblowing technology that will allow journalists and others to contact the organisation securely and anonymously.

While contacting IPI through ordinary methods such as phone and email remains possible, the secure form offers journalists and others the possibility to report press freedom violations to IPI while sidestepping the fear of surveillance by state or non-state actors.

When used with Tor browser, the contact form encrypts users’ identity and location as well as the content of any message sent to IPI. The form can be quickly accessed by pasting the following URL in the Tor browser: http://ihds74mnwv3rhx2j.onion . Using the form with a standard (i.e., Chrome, Firefox etc.) browser is possible, but will render users’ location and IP address vulnerable to being traced by third parties. IPI strongly recommends using the form with the Tor browser.

Additional guidelines on how to maximise security and anonymity while using the form are described on IPI’s website, including in the form of a video tutorial.

IPI Digital Media Coordinator Javier Luque described the platform’s launch as a response to the potential for growing web surveillance to cause journalists to self-censor the reporting of press freedom violations.

“In this age of growing surveillance and hacker attacks, it is essential that journalists have the possibility to report attacks, threats and abuse against themselves or others without fear of retribution by state or non-state actors,” he said. Our secure contact form, which is based on advanced whistleblowing technology and shields the user’s identify, location and message from third parties, provides journalists and others a safe and anonymous way of contacting us.”
