IPI’s Local News & Innovation Network hosted a virtual newsroom visit to Liceulice on October 15, 11:00 CET.
Meet Liceulice (meaning The Face of the Street), a monthly street paper from Serbia that has existed for more than 15 years, serving as a platform dedicated to strengthening civic activism, solidarity and emancipation.
Each issue is distributed through the network of vendors in Belgrade and other towns in Serbia. The vendors come from various marginalized groups, facing homelessness, disability, poverty, and social exclusion. They earn half of the price of every sold copy.
The magazine is covering the topics of public interest, such as ecology and green politics, advocating for human rights, housing for all, public health, free education, smart urban development, activism and civic participation, etc. An important aspect is also the sensibilisation of the readers through visual art, illustrations and photography in the magazine.
Liceulice journalists, illustrators and photographers have been awarded with both local and international awards for public activism, reporting on poverty and social exclusion, articles on combating discrimination and promoting equality and tolerance, feminist alliance in the media, and best cover illustration. Liceulice is also a member of the International Network of Street Papers – INSP.
Topics covered in the visit:
- About Liceulice, 15 years of history
- Who is behind the paper and how do their internal processes work
- What it’s like to run a print paper in the age of digitalisation
- How does the organization work with their audiences
- What’s the future of print publications
- and more
At the newsroom visit, we heard from:
- Nikoleta Kosovac, program coordinator
- Dunja Karanovic, editorial board
- Sandra Djuric Milinov, communications
- Iva Petrovic, coordinator of the vendors
What are the Virtual Newsroom Visits?
Virtual Newsroom Visits – a series of virtual live events, open to the wider public and promoted in our IPI members’ network, as well as the IPI’s Local News and Innovation Network. In the series, we invite experienced, innovative independent media organizations to share the BTS of their media business. These first-hand stories serve as a resource and inspiration for other journalism organizations striving to make a positive impact in their communities.
The broader goal is to level up the floor of the industry’s understanding and knowledge and create opportunities for exchange, helping our peers to do the best journalism for our communities. We now open the 5th season of IPI’s newsroom visits, organized as part of IPI’s Local News & Innovation Network, which hosts our Slack community for peer-to-peer discussion. Do you want to be a part of this series? Get in touch via innovation[at]ipi[dot]media.
