IPI session at the Global IDEI Conference
(Addis Ababa, Ethiopia)

As online attacks toward journalists in Africa continue, there is an imminent need to develop the necessary mechanisms and strategies to address the emerging threats. Of note has been the increase in online harassment, which in other instances comes in the form of coordinated disinformation campaigns.  As part of IPI’s work on strengthening the safety of journalists in Sub-Saharan Africa, IPI in collaboration with The Africa Editors Forum, will host a workshop on creating gender-sensitive online protocols for newsrooms to address online harassment of journalists. The workshop will be held on November 7, 2024, at the global conference to commemorate International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists (#IDEI2024), in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

This session will facilitate information sharing on approaches and initiatives to tackle online harassment, drawing from the region’s expertise, including local newsroom managers and editors. This workshop will also be a platform to identify clear and actionable recommendations for joint collaboration across the region and beyond, in a bid to effectively address online threats toward journalists.
