On August 28, 2022, journalists Dilia Contreras Cantillo and Leiner Montero Ortega were shot dead near the town of Fundación, in the department of Magdalena, in northern Colombia. The journalists were returning from covering the Patron Saint Festivities in the Santa Rosa de Lima municipality when two gunmen on a motorbike opened fire on the vehicle in which the journalists were. Besides killing the journalists, a third person in the car was injured during the incident.
Leiner ran the Leiner Montero Historias website and was director of the Sol Digital Stereo radio station, where Dilia also worked while also contributing to other media outlets including Santa Marta media, El Informador, Hoy Diario and Voces.
