Humberto Coronel, Paraguay

On September 6, 2022 an unidentified man on a motorcycle fatally shot journalist Humberto Coronel as he was leaving work, the offices of privately owned Radio Amambay, in the city of Pedro Juan Caballero in Paraguay, near the country’s border with Brazil. According to local media, Coronel was shot eight times.

Coronel had received a written death threat in his home only a few months earlier in June. According to ABC Color, the threat read in Portuguese that Coronel and another journalist “knew too much.” The threat was reported to authorities.

The national police reported on September 17 that they had arrested the hitman who allegedly killed Coronel.
