Russian reporter Ivan Safronov was imprisoned for 22-years after being convicted of treason charges by a Moscow court. Safronov, a well-respected correspondent who worked for Kommersant and Vedomosti, was accused of passing military secrets to Czech spies. He denied the charges. Safronov rejected a plea bargain which could have almost halved his sentence. Safronov was arrested in July 2020, after leaving journalism to work as an adviser to the head of the state space agency.
