On 21 February 2023, Russia’s internet regulator and censor Roskomnadzor blocked access to Redkollegiya, a website awarding prizes for independent reporting in Russia. The access block was reported on by Roskomsvoboda, a Russian internet freedom monitoring project. A Roskomnadzor representative who spoke with semi-independent outlet Vedomosti said Redkollegiya was blocked for repeated cases of alleged “fake news” on the war in Ukraine. According to Russian laws, publications on the war not based on official Russian sources can be considered “fake news”. Using the word “war” instead of “special military operation” to speak of the war is also illegal. Roskomsvoboda added that Redkollegiya did not adhere to these rules in its publications, for instance by using the word “war”.
