Puntland police detain journalists, prevent them from reporting

On February 18, 2024, police in Garowe, Puntland State, detained freelance journalist Jamal Muhumed Osman and his producer, who are affiliated with the UK’s Channel 4 News. The journalists were conducting interviews for a documentary on the Red Sea crisis and had received the necessary security clearance. Nevertheless, they were intercepted at Garowe Airport and taken into custody in the city, only to be released later that evening. As a result, their access to information sources was obstructed, impeding their journalistic duties, and they had to return to Ethiopia the next day.
