Police raid broadcaster, seize equipment

On January 6, 2024, Somaliland police raided the premises of media house MM Somali TV, in an attempt to interrupt the discussion on the Somaliland-Ethiopia maritime deal and crackdown on criticism. The work equipment of the media house was damaged by the security forces and some were confiscated. The police also arrested and detained three journalists, Mohamed Abdi Ilig (founder of MM Somali TV), reporter Mohamed Abdi Abdullahi (known as Andar), and cameraman Ilyaas Abdinasir. Abdullahi and  Abdinasir were released on January 9. Mohamed Abdi Ilig remained in detention for 43 days without any charges brought against him, before being released on February 18.
