Police in DRC arrest journalists over interview

On September 21, elements of the Congolese National Police (PNC) and the National Intelligence Agency (ANR) arrested Djaffar Sabiti and Arlette Bashizi, two journalists who were reporting on the killing of protesters by the Congolese army. They were arrested while conducting interviews with witnesses. OLPA, a local press defence group, condemned the incident as a violation of press freedom, which is constitutionally guaranteed in the DRC. The journalists were subjected to several hours of interrogation and accused of reporting from a “dangerous” location without a mission order or prior authorization from the mayor of Karisimbi. OLPA told IPI that they were released on the same day.
