Police assault and detain journalist, confiscate equipment

On February 21, 2024, Kasarhch Anigolu, a journalist of the newspaper The Whistler was assaulted and detained by police in Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory (FCT). According to reports, Anigolu was filming a raid on Bureau de Change (BDC) operators in Wuse Zone 4 when the officers assaulted and arrested her. Despite clearly identifying herself as a journalist, she was assaulted and her equipment was confiscated. She was held at the Anti-Violence Crime Unit (former SARS office) in Guzape about eight hours before being released.
