Police arrest journalist over ‘public insults’

On January 18, 2024, police arrested journalist Jacques Mumpe of the Community Radio Mwinda, based in DRC’s Kiwulu Province, and took him to the criminal investigation department. This followed a radio broadcast stating that the station was under pressure from former minister Guy Mikulu Pombo, who had recently acquired the building housing the media outlet. Based on his statement on radio, the police accused Mumpe of public insults. He was detained for 11 days before being released on January 29, and after paying a fine equivalent to 199 euros.
