Multiple independent journalists targeted by hacking attempts

Independent journalists from several media outlets received spam messages and hacking attempts targeting their mobile phones. The unknown hackers attempted to gain access to their social media channels and bank accounts. The targeted journalists included Mediazona correspondent Alla Konstantinova as well as several journalists from The Village and Pskovskaya Gubernia. The executive director and a correspondent St. Petersburg media Bumaga (“Paper”) Kirill Artemenko and Vladislav Chirin also received spam messages. Three journalists from the shut-down TV channel Dozhd were also targeted: Tikhon Dzyadko, Sonya Groysman and Ksenia Mironova. Also targeted were the editor-in-chief of “Republic” Dmitry Kolezev, 7×7 correspondent Maxim Polyakov and ex-editor of Doxa student media, Armen Aramyan. It was not clear whether the attackers were able to gain access to the journalists’ private communications.
