On December 14, prominent journalist João Chamusse was found dead outside his home in the capital, Maputo in an apparent murder. Police arrested a neighbor, Nelson Jone Mulanda, after the journalist’s were found in his home, but did not provide information about a possible motive. Reports also indicated that Chamuse’s telephone and laptop were missing. Local press freedom watchdog MISA Mozambique told IPI that they had petitioned the office of the attorney general to demand justice for Chamusse. Authorities acknowledged the letter without providing further information about the case. At the time this alert was filed it was still not clear whether the journalist’s murder was linked to his work. Chamusse is known as a staunch critic of poor governance in general and has criticized the current administration under President Filipe Nyusi.
