On 3 October 2025, French photojournalist Antoni Lallican was killed in a Russian FPV-drone strike near the settlement of Komyshuvakha near Kramatorsk, in Ukraine’s Donbass region. Lallican was traveling with Ukrainian photojournalist George Ivanchenko, who was seriously wounded in the same incident (see separate alert). The two photojournalists were wearing protective gear with visible “PRESS” markings and were accompanied by a press officer delegated by Ukraine’s armed forces.
Lallican died of his injuries immediately following the strike.
The photojournalist worked for a range of French and international news agencies, including Le Monde, Le Figaro, Libération, Mediapart, Die Welt, Stern, TAZ, Le Temps, Der Standard, La Presse, and the Hans Lucas press agency.
The attack was the first instance since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in which a journalist was killed in a Russian drone strike. According to reporting by Ukrainian and international media, the Russian FPV-drone directly targeted Lallican and Ivanchenko.
