On October 30, 2023, individuals allegedly accused of hijacking Reconstruction and Development Program (RDP) houses in the Eastern Cape assaulted two journalists, Jessica Bobo and camera operator Sbu Maingo, of the Mpuma Kapa TV (MPKTV). The duo was covering the alleged hijacking of the RDP when they were assaulted by these unknown individuals. The individuals turned hostile when they realized they had been recorded, and demanded the cessation of the reportage. Maingo was injured as a result of the attacks. The South African editors forum (SANEF) condemned the incident and called upon law enforcement authorities to investigate the assault and bring the suspected culprits to book while urging for stronger measures to ensure the safety and protection of journalists carrying the public information work.
