Court in Dagestan region fines local journalist for “fake news” on Russian army

On 24 August 2022, a court in Makhachkala, the capital of Russia’s Dagestan region, fined Mairbek Agayev, the Editor-in-Chief of Chernovik, a major regional independent media outlet. According to the court, Agayev “discredited” the Russian Armed Forces by publishing fake news. It was not immediately clear what allegedly false information the journalist was accused of distributing.
