On December 6 and 9, 2023, the military-led regime in Guinea ordered the suspension of at least five televisions and one radio station from broadcasting from Canal+, a pay-TV and radio broadcaster. The order came from the state media regulatory body, Haute Autorité de la Communication (HAC). The media houses targeted by the order were: Espace FM, Espace TV, Evasion FM, Evasion TV, and Djoma Radio. The regulatory body invoked “national security” as justification for the suspension. It alleged that the suspension was not intended to silence the media concerned, but to address issues such as “the promotion of communal hatred, the escalation of social and political tensions, and the propagation of divisive discourse.”
