The International Press Institute (IPI) is pleased to welcome Reid Standish to its team as editorial director. In this role, Reid will shape and implement IPI’s editorial operations and strategy, overseeing editorial and research standards across statements, reports, and publications. He will also lead work to strengthen the reach and impact of IPI’s advocacy and support work among policymakers, media, and partner organisations.
Reid joins IPI after more than a decade as a foreign correspondent and editor in Central Asia, Russia, the United States, and across Europe. Most recently he was China Global Affairs Correspondent at Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, where he reported on Beijing’s expanding presence across Eurasia.
Reid was previously an editor and Moscow correspondent for Foreign Policy magazine. His reporting has also appeared in The Atlantic, Politico, and The Washington Post, and he has contributed to cross-border investigations with the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists. He has reported from countries where journalists routinely face surveillance, harassment, and legal pressure, and has spent much of his career working alongside the independent newsrooms IPI exists to support.
“Reid brings the judgement of a reporter who has worked in the difficult conditions IPI seeks to change,” IPI Executive Director Scott Griffen said. “We are glad to have him with us at a critical moment for independent media.”
Reid holds an International Master’s degree in Russian, Central European, East European and Eurasian Studies from the University of Glasgow and a bachelor’s degree in international studies from Simon Fraser University. He is based in Prague and begins at IPI on September 1, 2026.
