Ukrainian photographer Serhiy Nikolayev, 43, was killed on Feb. 28, 2015 during an artillery attack near Peski, a village northeast of Donetsk. Nikolayev was seriously wounded during the attack and was reportedly alive upon arrival at a local hospital but later succumbed to his injuries. He was working for Kiev-based daily Segodnya and was with his colleague Bogdan Rossinsky covering fighting between Ukrainian forces and pro-Russian separatists at the time of his death. Despite a ceasefire ordered on Feb. 15, shelling continued in the region. He is the first Ukrainian journalist to be killed in the fighting in eastern Ukraine. Throughout his career, Nikolayev covered wars in Georgia, Libya, Somalia, and Syria.
