Martin Kok, a former criminal-turned-crime reporter running the news website Vlinderscrime, was shot dead in his car outside a club in Laren on Dec. 8, 2016 after escaping an apparent attempt the previous day that was caught on surveillance video but of which Kok was unaware. Kok was also the target of an attempted car bombing on July 2, 2016 and his postings online reportedly angered elements of organized crime, but the motive for his killing remains unclear.
