Marcos Hernández Bautista, a reporter for the daily Noticias, Voz e Imagen de Oaxaca, was shot in the head when getting into his car outside a bar in San Andrés Huaxpaltepec, in the state of Oaxaca. On March 3, 2017, a regional court in Puerto Escondido convicted Santiago Martínez, a former police commander of the Santiago de Jamiltepec municipal police, of homicide and sentenced him to 30 years in prison. However, the motive for the murder remains unclear.
