Kamel abu al-Walid died in a landmine explosion in Afrin, northern Syria on March 19, 2018. Al-Walid worked as a photographer for Jarabulus Media Office and was covering Turkish military operation in Afrin when a landmine detonated next to him. According to witnesses, al-Walid died from his injuries at the scene.
