The International Press Institute (IPI) joins in several events to commemorate and bring awareness on World Press Freedom Day.

IPI’s Executive Director Barbara Trionfi and IPI Board Member Beata Balogová take part in the panel session “Press Freedom Under Attack” at the Nordic Media Festival in Bergen, Norway. Organized by The Norwegian Press Association and IPI Norway National Committee, the session highlights challenges to Press Freedom in Northern Europe.

In Brussels, IPI Deputy Director Scott Griffen participates in the “Difference Day“. The event is organized by the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Université Libre de Bruxelles and Erasmushogeschool Brussel, BOZAR, & Evens Foundation, along with other partners.

Scott Griffen moderates the session “Silencing Critical Voices – Killing Me Softly” which analyzes the variety of ways in which public authorities and private actors put pressure on the media and silence critical voices in Europe.

Also in Brussels, IPI participates in an European Parliament event about “The situation of media and freedom of expression in Turkey” on May 3-4, that brings together media and civil society representatives from Turkey and across the European Union.

IPI’s Turkey Advocacy Coordinator Caroline Stockford represents IPI in the event to be opened by President of the European Parliament Antonio Tajani.

Also, IPI’s members and National Committees around the globe have issued statements and organised events to commemorate World Press Freedom Day.
