Germain Kennedy Muliwavyo, a reporter for Muungano FM, died of gunshot wounds to his head and stomach after being caught in an ambush near Beni, in the North Kivu province in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. News agencies reported that the journalist was covering security operations on Feb. 15 when the attack took place. He died in hospital a day later, while two other journalist travelling with Muliwavyo were wounded. Muungano station head Jacques Kikuni told the Associated Press that the attackers were believed to be part of the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), a Ugandan rebel group. The Italian-based Missionary International Service News Agency quoted Kassonga Mboukar, secretary-general of the Congolese National Press Union, as saying: “It is shocking news… A journalist isn’t a combatant. This is a crime: the [rebels] dared attack a convoy of journalists.”
