Cosme Maestrado was shot 10 times in front of a shopping centre in Ozamiz City on the island of Mindanao on Aug. 27, 2015. The unidentified shooters escaped on a motorbike. Maestrado was an anchor at DXOC, an affiliate of dzXL-Radio Mindanao Network. His programme was described as “hard hitting” and covered politics and corruption. According to the Center for Media Freedom and Responsibility, a Philippines-based organisation, colleagues suggested that Maestrado’s work may have been the motive for his killing. Maestrado’s brother pointed in particular to a recent segment in which Maestrado had scrutinised a local politician’s purchase of construction equipment. Maestrado had apparently been targeted in an assassination attempt in 2011.
