Motorcycle-borne assailants gunned down journalist Bakhshish Elahi, the bureau chief of an Urdu newspaper, in Haripur, north of Islamabad, on June 11, 2017 as he was heading to work. A local lawmaker reportedly confessed to hiring the killers with the help of another journalist, accusing Elahi of having blackmailed her, but the true motive was initially unclear.
