A police officer in the remote town of Khost, near Afghanistan’s border with Pakistan, shot and killed Pulitzer Prize-winning Associated Press photographer Anja Niedringhaus, a German national, on April 4, 2014. Reports said the oficer approached the vehicle in which Niedringhaus was traveling at a security checkpoint, shouted “Allahu Akbar” (God is great) and opened fire. Veteran AP reporter Kathy Gannon, a Canadian national, was seriously injured in the attack. The officer surrendered after the attack and was taken into custody.
