The International Press Institute is a partner of the Global Editors Network Summit titled “The Rise of Platform-Driven News”, which took place from 15-17 June in Vienna, gathering over 700 participants from 70 countires.

This year’s summit offered newsgaming bootcamps, robot journalism, ad-blocker solutions, the GEN Expo, and a variety of other thought-provoking sessions, including a conversation on “Privacy: A Must Do for News Providers and Platforms” between IPI Executive Director Barbara Trionfi and Max Schrems, the Austrian privacy activist who became famous for his legal battle and campaigns against Facebook for privacy violation (photo). The discussion held on 17 June seeked to answer some of the following questions: How at risk are our own privacy and digital security in the era of mega media platforms? How much do “they” know about each one of us, who owns those data and who can make a profit from them? Why is it important that journalists stand up for reader privacy?
