Four men hacked atheist blogger Ananta Bijoy Das to death on a street near his home in Sylhet on May 12, 2015. Das was a contributor to the blog “Mukto-Mona” (Free-Mind), which criticised religious intolerance and extremism. The blog was formerly moderated by blogger Avijit Roy, who was similarly hacked to death in Dhaka on Feb. 26, 2015. Das and Roy were among a list of 84 writers whose names had appeared on a hit list of “atheist bloggers” drawn up by Islamic extremist groups in 2013. Das’ death came just six weeks after another blogger whose name appeared on the list, Washiqur Rahman Babu, was hacked to death in Dhaka.
